Clear Aligners
Clear aligners are a transparent, plastic form of dental braces used to adjust teeth. They are a great solution for patients seeking a more discreet orthodontic treatment than conventional braces, as they do not use brackets or wires.
Clear aligners are custom made to fit into your mouth like a mouthguard. Each set of trays is worn for a predetermined period of time, usually between one and two weeks, and moves your teeth slightly in the direction Dr. Shojaei had prescribed. The next set of trays will then continue the tooth movement and so on, until all the teeth are in their final position.
“Buttons” or “attachments” are often required with clear aligners. These small protrusions of filling material are placed on the lip or cheek surface of several teeth. They add stability and retention and provide a greater surface area if more pressure is required to move a tooth in a particular direction. These attachments are removed at completion of treatment and do not damage the tooth in any way.
Clear aligners are great for patients requiring minor orthodontic treatment. The patient would be committed to following the restrictions (no eating or drinking anything other than water with the trays in place) and be able to wear the trays for a total of 22 hours a day. Clear aligners are highly dependent on compliance and must be worn diligently as prescribed to ensure a successful outcome.
